RE
Religion has always been with us. Throughout history, it has expressed the deepest questions human beings can ask, and it has taken a central place in the lives of virtually all civilizations and cultures.
This may be true of the past, but what about the present - and the future? In recent times, critics have suggested that religion is on the way out. Technology and science have changed our view of the world radically, leading some to say that we’ve entered a new stage of human existence, without religion. However, we still find religion everywhere - on television, in film, in popular music, in our towns and communities. We discover religion at the centre of global issues and cultural conflict. Why does religion continue to thrive? Can you be a spiritual person without being religious? Why are we here? What is our purpose in life?
At Furness Academy, the RE Team believe that the study of religion has an increasing role in the current climate. We believe that it is not about being religious, but more about being comfortable with religion. We want students to know what they think, understand what others think, and be able to explain themselves – if they don’t agree, fine, but be able to say why!
At KS3, students have an hour a week in which they will cover different themes such as Morality, Ceremonies, Festivals and Buddhism. During KS4, students follow the Edexcel GCSE course. The following units are taught:
Unit 2
Belief in God, Matters of Life and Death, Marriage and the Family, Community Cohesion
Unit 8
Rights and Responsibilities, Environmental and Medical Issues, Peace and Conflict, Crime and Punishment
