Art

Curriculum

Students follow an intense skill and knowledge based curriculum in years 7 & 8. Students then can opt to continue their art studies on a variety of courses to suit their individual needs.

Course available from year 9 onwards are; Art skills, BTEC Art and Design, GCSE Fine Art, AS Art Skills.

Year 7 - Formal elements of drawing with contemporary art style references.

  • Local Environment, focusing on colour theory.
  • Cultural studies - Manga

Year 8 - Cultural Studies- Asian Indian Art. Investigating traditions & beliefs.

  • Portraiture, Investigating Pop Art and introducing new technologies.
  • Art through the ages, A visual representation.

Art Skills - Mixed media investigation studies.

  • Virtual Gallery - a personal response.
  • Fair trade - social, environmental & economic issues.
  • Cultural Studies- Oceania

GCSE

The course work element of Fine Art involves students creating a portfolio of work which consists of one extended studied topic plus satellite projects each focusing on specific course assessment objectives.

BTEC

Students follow vocational based design briefs working in a wide variety of media and techniques.

AS Art Skills

Allows students to continue working to their strengths and personal areas of enjoyment. A wider knowledge of art and its place within society including career paths are developed along with broadening experiences through exhibition visits, art workshops and personally exhibiting work locally and nationally.

Resources

The Art department consist of two large rooms on each site. Facilities are available for a variety of art and design activities, from print making, ceramics, textiles, photography, fine art and sculpture. New technologies in Art are developing with the use of iPod touches, iPads and netbook.

Extended learning opportunities

A programme of enrichment activities takes place throughout the year including after school clubs, artist in residences, workshops, gallery and exhibition visits. Students are also encouraged to enter competitions and exhibit work at local and national levels.
