Btec Science Visit

BTEC First Certificate in Applied Science

The BTEC is a work related qualification that is 100% internally assessed by completion of a portfolio of evidence to meet the PASS, MERIT or DISTINCTION criteria.

On the 12th November 2009 a group of Year 11 students new to the North campus went on a field study trip to the Castlehead Field Study Centre in Grange. There they were guided by tutors to investigate the organisms living in the river Eea. Students investigated how the river organisms changed from the source of the river high in the fells to the village of Cartmel. Students changed into wellies and waterproofs to carry out ‘kick sampling’ and measure the width, depth and flow rate at each site visited. Students identified and counted the organisms found then returned them to their home.  Students had to produce a detailed report about their day, the organisms found, and consider the impact of human activities on the aquatic environment investigated

The start to the term has been a positive and busy one.  Students arrived back to both sites looking smarter than ever in their uniforms and have approached their studies with a real sense of determination and diligence.  The prefects on both sites have taken to their duties well, and are to be applauded on their efforts to give their personal best. Being a prefect is an honour and provides the opportunity, amongst other things, to represent all the students in meetings with myself and other Senior Leaders.
