County Cross Country

Country Cross Country, South Site, Saturday 6th Feb 2010.

The day started bright and sunny, but it was too good to last and sure enough the freezing fog soon rolled in off the docks. The five runners who qualified to represent Barrow Schools Cross Country team by finishing in the top 8 of the Dowdales competition arrived ready and willing to take on the best runners from the rest of Cumbria. From Furness Academy North were James Curtis and Josh Moorby (minor boys), Cally Jo Dawson (minor girls), Mel Curtis and Sophie Killip (junior girls).

In the minor boys race James Curtis was expected to win and was well on the way to achieving this goal when whilst leading he and the runner in second place were sent the wrong way. He carried on running despite being close to the back of the field after the first lap and managed to overtake more than half of the runners ahead of him. Although he didn’t finish in the top 12 he will still be put forward to represent the Cumbria team in the North West championships. In the same race Josh Moorby ran very well from start to finish and achieved a very creditable 15th place, just outside the qualification for the NW team. In the minor girls race Cally Jo Dawson ran in a very strong field and finished 34th.

The junior girls race was full of very strong runners from all over Cumbria, we were represented by Mel Curtis and Sophie Killip. Both girls ran very strong races to finish in the top half of the field, Mel 13th and Sophie 17th, again unfortunately both girls narrowly missing out on qualification for the Cumbria team.

The start to the term has been a positive and busy one.  Students arrived back to both sites looking smarter than ever in their uniforms and have approached their studies with a real sense of determination and diligence.  The prefects on both sites have taken to their duties well, and are to be applauded on their efforts to give their personal best. Being a prefect is an honour and provides the opportunity, amongst other things, to represent all the students in meetings with myself and other Senior Leaders.
