The Sites
Furness Academy is situated in Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria. The Academy has a North campus at the former Thorncliffe site and a South campus at the former Parkview site.
Students will not have to travel between the sites, but there will be opportunities to take part in specific extra-curricular activities.
All students that have applied for a place at one of the three predecessor schools will transfer to the Academy in September 2009. From September 2010, the new admissions policy will apply. The admissions policy is available to download here.
We expect the Academy to be popular and oversubscribed, and we hope that our admissions policy will ensure that students who live furthest away from another school get a place so that they don’t have to travel past the Academy.
We estimate that there will be a gradual decrease in numbers of students from 1750 now to around 1200 by 2014 to 2015. At that stage, we will be aiming for an equal distribution of students at both sites to ensure the quality of the curriculum is the same.
