Specialisms
Specialisms put emphasis on certain strengths in all aspects of learning, without detracting from good all-round education. Specialisms are emphasised in every subject across the curriculum, and help students to take knowledge from one area to others. This is an important skill, and will help every student, no matter what his or her ability in the specialist subjects themselves.
Sports and Applied Mathematics are Furness Academy’s two specialist subjects. Both of these build upon the good practice already evident in the predecessor schools, providing a balance between practical and academic skills.
Sport
Sport is already important for the people in Barrow. Barrow has already produced some excellent sports players and we have some of the best sports teams in Cumbria, but we want to make sport in Barrow even better. Students participate in competitive team games, and a major emphasis is placed on teamwork and the achievement of excellence.
Students participate in a wide range of sports, including athletics, football, netball and rugby. These are available on both the North and the South campuses.
Healthy living and how to have a better lifestyle also make up a major part of this specialism.
Applied Mathematics
Applied Mathematics is our second specialism and will be available to students on both campuses.
Barrow has a rich heritage in engineering industries, which use mathematics as an integral part of their business at every level. Achievement in maths, alongside a broad and balanced selection of other subjects, helps students to get the jobs they want by developing an important skill for these local businesses.
Applied Mathematics will develop each pupil’s understanding and application of mathematical concepts through a variety of different teaching methods. Both pure and applied mathematics will be taught and the practical and day-to-day relevance of mathematics will be demonstrated through lessons and extra-curricular activities.
