Geography Curriculum

The Furness Academy Geography curriculum for each year group is detailed below. 

Key Stage 3 Curriculum

  • Number of lessons: Two KS3 Geography lessons per week.

  • Geographical skills and fieldwork

All students need to carry the following equipment in pencil cases in their bags.

  • Pencil
  • Pen
  • Ruler
  • Rubber
  • Laptop
  • Formal assessments during each unit of work where students will then be given the opportunity to reflect on their work and set targets for future progress
  • Substantive knowledge will be regularly assessed through retrieval assessments
  • Peer and self-assessment used throughout each unit of work

Check your child is engaging with homework tasks set online to prepare for knowledge recall tests and assessments.

Trips within UK and internationally have been organised including White Scar Caves at Ingleton, Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, Coniston and Windermere,  Naples in Italy and Morocco.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum

Key Knowledge and content in Year 10

  • Topic 1: Urban Challenges
  • Topic 2: Physical Landscapes of the UK
  • Topic 3: Resource Management

Key Knowledge and content in Year 11

  • Topic 1: The Living World
  • Topic 2: Natural Hazards
  • Topic 3: Economic Change

Number of lessons:

  • Three KS4 Geography lessons per week.

The ability to:

    • Demonstrate knowledge of locations, places, processes, environments and different scales. (Assessment Objective 1)
    • Demonstrate geographical understanding of: concepts and how they are used in relation to places, environments and processes; the interrelationships between places, environments and processes. (Assessment Objective 2)
    • Apply knowledge and understanding to interpret, analyse and evaluate geographical information and issues to make judgements. (Assessment Objective 3)
    • Select, adapt and use a variety of skills and techniques to investigate questions and issues and communicate findings. (Assessment Objective 4)

Year 10:

  • Mid Unit and End of Unit formal written assessments – exam questions.
  • Regular knowledge recall tests.
  • External exams at the end of Year 11:
    • Paper 1: Living with the Physical Environment (35%) 1 hour 30 minutes
    • Paper 2: Challenges in the Human Environment (35%) 1 hour 45 minutes:
    • Paper 3: Geographical applications (30%) 1 hour 20 minutes

Year 11: 

  • Mid Unit and End of Unit formal written assessments – exam questions.
  • Regular knowledge recall tests.
  • External exams at the end of Year 11:
    • Paper 1: Living with the Physical Environment (35%) 1 hour 30 minutes
    • Paper 2: Challenges in the Human Environment (35%) 1 hour 45 minutes:
    • Paper 3: Geographical applications (30%) 1 hour 20 minutes
