Assessment and reporting

Religious Studies Curriculum

The Furness Academy Religious Studies curriculum for each year group is detailed below. 

Key Stage 3 Curriculum

  • Topic 1: Introduction to Beliefs and World Religions
  • Topic 2: Man or Messiah
  • Topic 3: Buddhism
  • Topic 1: Anti Racism
  • Topic 2: Is Religion Dangerous?
  • Topic 3: Philosophy
  • Topic 1: Worldviews
  • Topic 2: Values and Morality
  • Topic 3: Technology and Medicine

Number of lessons:

  • Number of lessons: One KS3 Religious Studies lessons per week.

The ability to:

    • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of religion and belief, including:
    • Beliefs, practices and sources of authority
    • Influence on individuals, communities and societies
    • Similarities and differences within and/or between religions 
    • Analyse and evaluate aspects of religion and belief, including their significance and influence

All students need to carry the following equipment in pencil cases in their bags.

  • Pencil
  • Pen
  • Ruler
  • Rubber
  • Laptop
  • One formal assessment per topic at the end of the unit. Students will be given the opportunity to reflect on their work after each assessment and set targets for future progress.
  • Knowledge recall will be assessed through regular retrieval practice assessments (five times per unit).
  • Use of peer and self-assessment throughout each unit of work.
  • End of year assessment: knowledge recall and key skills.
  • Check your child is engaging with homework tasks set online to prepare for knowledge recall tests and assessments.

We are working in partnership with the Anne Frank Trust, looking at issues of prejudice and discrimination.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum

Key Knowledge and content in Year 10

  • Topic 1: Christian Beliefs
  • Topic 2: Marriage and the Family
  • Topic 3: Living the Christian Life
  • Topic 4: Matters of Life and Death
  • Topic 5: Muslim Beliefs

Key Knowledge and content in Year 11

  • Topic 1: Crime and Punishment
  • Topic 2: Living the Muslim Life
  • Topic 3: Peace and Conflict

Number of lessons:

  • Three KS4 Religious Studies lessons per week.

The ability to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of religion and belief, including:
  • Beliefs, practices and sources of authority
  • Influence on individuals, communities and societies
  • Similarities and differences within and/or between religions and (Assessment Objective 1)
  • Analyse and evaluate aspects of religion and belief, including their significance and influence. (Assessment Objective 2)

Year 10:

    • End of Unit formal written assessments – exam questions.
    • Regular knowledge recall assessments.
    • Seneca Learning.
    • External exams at the end of Year 11:
      • Paper 1: Religion and Ethics – Christianity (50%) 1 hour 45 minutes
      • Paper 2: Religion, Peace and Conflict – Islam (50%) 1 hour 45 minutes

Year 11: 

  • End of Unit formal written assessments – exam questions.
  • Regular knowledge recall assessments.
  • Seneca Learning
  • External exams at the end of Year 11:
    • Paper 1: Religion and Ethics – Christianity (50%) 1 hour 45 minutes
