Key Stage 3 Curriculum

  • Topic 1: Introduction to Personal Development

  • Topic 3: Wellbeing and Mental Health
  • Topic 4: Puberty
  • Topic 5: Careers Education – BMS, Personal Finance and Economic Wellbeing.
  • Topic 6: Summer Safety – Basic First Aid.

  • Topic 2 and 3: Drugs Education/Risk Taking Behaviours
  • Topic 4: Personal Identity – Emotional Wellbeing and Resilience.

Number of lessons:

  • One KS3 Personal Development lesson per week.

The ability to:

  • Learn to manage diverse relationships,  online lives, and the increasing influence of peers and the media.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of CSE, mental health, staying safe and future careers opportunities, including:
    • How to stay safe online and support services available
  • Understanding mental health
    • How to manage mental health
    • Where to access support

All students need to carry the following equipment in pencil cases in their bags.

  • Pencil
  • Pen
  • Ruler
  • Rubber
  • Laptop
  • Regular assessments take place as part of each topic. Students will be given the opportunity to reflect on their knowledge and topic understanding gained after each assessment.
  • Knowledge recall will be assessed through retrieval practice quizzes, Kahoot, Forms.
  • We believe it is important for students to have opportunities to reflect on their learning, especially when that learning relates directly to the individual’s identity – their personal qualities, attitudes, skills, attributes, achievements and influences.
  • KS3: Check your child is engaging with homework tasks set 
  • Support your child in populating their Global Bridge profile 
  • Attend Health or Careers related events offered by the Academy

For Year 9 specifically:

  • Access Unifrog with your child to explore careers related information  
  • Attend Year 9 Options evening
  • Support your child in populating their Global Bridge profile

  • Topic 4: My Future Journey

Number of lessons:

  • One KS4 Personal Development lesson per week.
  • Learn to manage diverse relationships, their online lives, and the increasing influence of peers and the media.
  • Demonstrate awareness of how to move towards an independent role in adult life
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of CSE, Mental Health, Staying Safe and Future careers opportunities, including:
    • How to stay safe Online and support services available
  • Understanding mental health
    • How to manage mental health
    • Where to access support
  • Regular assessments take place as part of each topic. Students will be given the opportunity to reflect on their knowledge and topic understanding gained after each assessment.
  • They will identify gaps in this knowledge and set targets to facilitate future progress.
  • Knowledge recall will be assessed through retrieval practice quizzes, (Kahoot, Forms)
  • Revisit key questions, extending with higher order questions. Invite students to think of key questions for future learning.
  • We believe it is important for students to have opportunities to reflect on their learning, especially when that learning relates directly to the individual’s identity – their personal qualities, attitudes, skills, attributes, achievements and influences.

Key Stage 4 Health and Social Care Curriculum

Key Knowledge and content in Health and Social Care

The BTEC Tech Award  is an introduction to vocational learning. The qualifications give learners the opportunity to build applied knowledge and skills that show an aptitude for further learning, both in the sector and more widely.

Three components are studies

  • Year 10  – Component 1 Human Lifespan Development
  • Year 11 – Component 2 Health and Social Care Services and Values
  • Year 11 – Component 3 Health and Wellbeing

Number of lessons:

  • Three Health and Social Care lessons per week

The Tech Award gives learners the opportunity to develop applied knowledge in the following areas: 

  • The life stages and key characteristics in the physical, intellectual, emotional and social (PIES) development classifications and the different factors that can affect an individual’s growth and development
  • Different life events and how individuals can adapt or be supported through changes caused by life events
  • Health and social care conditions, how they can be managed by the individual and the different health and social care services that are available
  • The barriers and obstacles an individual may encounter and how these can be overcome
  • The skills, attributes and values required to give care and how these benefit the individual
  • How factors can affect an individual’s current health and wellbeing
  • How physiological indicators and an individual’s lifestyle choices determine physical health
  • The use of the person-centred approach
  • Recommendations and actions to improving health and wellbeing and the barriers or obstacles individuals may face when following recommendations and the support available to overcome

Components 1 and 2 are assessed through non-exam internal assessment (Pearson Set Assessments).

This style of assessment promotes deep learning through ensuring the connection between knowledge and practice. The components focus on:

  • The development of applied knowledge and understanding of human growth and development across life stages and the factors that affect this, and how individuals deal with life events
  • The development of applied knowledge and understanding of different types of health and social care services and barriers to accessing them, and the skills, attributes and values required to give care.

Component 3 is an external examination
