Physical Education Curriculum

The Furness Academy Physical Education Curriculum for each year group is detailed below. 

Key Stage 3 Curriculum

Activities that are taught throughout Year 7 include:

  • Fundamental Key Skills
  • Locomotor Skills (Running & Jumping)
  • Stability (Twisting/ Balance
  • Throwing & Catching
  • Gymnastics (fundamental movements/Balances)
  • Dance
  • Team Games (Football/Rugby/Netball)
  • Healthy Active Lifestyles & Wellbeing
  • Orienteering
  • Athletics
  • Striking & Fielding (Cricket/Rounders/Softball)

Activities that are taught throughout Year 8 include:

  • Gymnastics (Flight /Vaulting)
  • Racket Skills (Badminton)
  • Team Games (Football/Rugby/Netball)
  • Healthy Active Lifestyles & Wellbeing
  • Orienteering
  • Athletics
  • Striking & Fielding (Cricket/Rounders/Softball)

Activities that are taught throughout Year 9 include:

  • Gymnastics (Trampolining)
  • Racket Skills (Badminton)
  • Team Games (Football/Rugby/Netball)
  • Healthy Active Lifestyles & Wellbeing
  • Orienteering

Number of lessons:

  • Two lessons taught as a double lesson

During the students Physical Education lessons, we aim to develop the students Declarative & Procedural knowledge in regards to their:

  • Motor competence
  • Sport specific skills
  • Sport Specific Rules, Strategies & Tactics
  • Health & Wellbeing
  • Resilience
  • Core Values
  • Ability to Co-operate with others
  • Teamwork

All students need to carry the following equipment in pencil cases in their bags.

  • Pencil
  • Pen
  • Ruler
  • Rubber
  • Laptop

All students need to bring the following equipment in their bags.

  • PE top (Indoor)
  • PE Top (outdoor)
  • Shorts
  • Tracksuit Bottoms/Leggings (Optional)
  • PE socks
  • Trainers
  • Football Boots (Activity dependent)
  • Towel

Students will be formally assessed at the end of each activity. They will be assessed on the key skills & objectives taught throughout that topic. Each topic has a knowledge organiser to aid the students throughout the unit.

Ensure that they have their PE kit every week

The department also looks to explore enrichment opportunities both within and outside the curriculum to enhance pupils’ enjoyment of sport. Examples of which include participation in:

  • Football
  • Rugby
  • Netball
  • Badminton
  • Table Tennis
  • Trampolining
  • Athletics
  • Cricket
  • Rounders
  • Gym Club
  • Inter School competitions against other local secondary schools

Activities that are taught throughout Key Stage 4 include:

  • Two lessons in Year 10 (as a double)
  • One lesson in Year 11

Activities that are taught throughout the BTEC course in Key Stage Four include:

  • Fitness for Sport & Exercise
  • Practical Sports Performance
  • Applying the principles of personal training
  • Practical Sports Performance
  • Leading sports activities

Number of lessons:

  • Three lessons per week

During the BTEC lessons lessons, we aim to develop the students Declarative & Procedural knowledge in each of the units. The students will learn:

  • The components of fitness, what they are, how to test them and how to improve them
  • The principles of training
  • Heart rate and Exercise intensity
  • Sport specific skills
  • Sport Specific Rules, Strategies & Tactics
  • How to design & follow training programmes to improve the components of fitness
  • Sport specific skills
  • Sport Specific Rules, Strategies & Tactics
  • How to analyse their performance & make suggestions on how to improve it.
  • What different types of leaders exist in sport
  • The qualities & responsibilities good sports leaders require
  • How to lead set up & lead sports sessions

Unit 1: Fitness for Sport & Exercise is assessed through a 70 minute external exam

Unit 2 : Practical Sports Performance & unit 3 Applying the principles of personal training is assessed through assessments & tasks throughout the course. The class teacher assesses & marks the work which is then moderated by an external examiner

All students need to bring the following equipment in their bags.

  • PE Kit (Indoor & Outdoor)
  • Laptop (most of the written work is produced electronically)

Ensure that they have their PE kit every week

Ensure that they remain up to date with coursework and complete homework set by the specified date

The department also provides sessions outside of school hours to support students and help them ensure that they are up to date and receive additional support to complete their coursework or prepare them for the external exam.
